Who's Who at the Center for Young Musicians- Lauren-Rose King

We are so pleased to welcome Lauren-Rose King into the community of teachers here at CYM! Ms. Lauren-Rose joins our vocal department for the 2016-2017 school year. 

 Lauren-Rose King has been praised for her “fantastic comic timing, extraordinarily clear voice and memorable agility” (DC Metro Theatre Arts). Lauren-Rose maintains an active performance career, and has sung with companies and ensembles such as the Pittsburgh Camerata, Marble Collegiate Choir, Center for Contemporary Opera, Boston Baroque, Bard Festival Chorale, Light Opera of New York, Washington National Cathedral, LA Opera, Maryland Opera Studio, New England Conservatory and Tanglewood. Lauren-Rose loves contemporary classical music and her professional collaborations include concerts, recitals and masterclasses with performers and composers Stephanie Blythe, Ricky Ian Gordon, Ellen Mandel, Jake Heggie, Libby Larsen, and John Musto. Competitions include first place in NATS, first place in NEC Concerto Competition, and National Finalist in the Classical Singer Competition. Recent roles include Musetta in La bohème, Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte, Yum-Yum in The Mikado, and Johanna in Sweeney Todd. Lauren-Rose holds degrees from New England Conservatory of Music and the Opera Studio at University of Maryland.

Lauren-Rose's teaching experience includes co-directing Sing Sing Sing, a NYC Children's Ensemble, a voice teacher at Highbridge Voices, an afterschool music program in NYC, Vocal Chairperson of Belvoir Terrace, a summer performing arts camp for girls in the Berkshire Mountains, Program Director for PALS Children's Chorus (now known as Voices Boston), and voice instructor for non-majors at University of Maryland. In addition to performing and teaching, Lauren-Rose loves playing board games, hanging out with animals and reading.


We enjoy a little Q+A to get to know Ms. Lauren-Rose a bit more: 

CYM:       What is your favorite piece of music to play and or favorite composer?

Ms. Lauren-Rose: I love Leonard Bernstein. My first exposure to Music Theatre was seeing West Side Story, and I was hooked immediately. His writing is transcendent and exciting and everything he composes is magic.

CYM:       What is your most memorable music performance?

Ms. Lauren-Rose: I have a lot of memorable musical experiences. The first time I sang in Carnegie Hall was super cool. But, a few years ago when I performed in Maryland, I sang the role of Musetta in La Boheme. Besides seeing it once and knowing the story, I wasn't too familiar with the opera. But after singing the role of fiery and fun Musetta, and living the story, I understood what all the hype was about. La Boheme is an amazing work, and everyone should see it - whether you love opera or not!

CYM:       Do you play other instruments beside teaching voice?

Ms. Lauren-Rose: I also play piano and I grew up playing clarinet.

CYM:       Tell us a little more about what you do outside of teaching and singing?

Ms. Lauren-Rose: I recently moved from New York City and I now live in Monroeville with my husband, Peter and our little corgi mix, Chestnut. We just adopted her and she's the love of our lives.

CYM:       What is your favorite treat to eat?

 Ms. Lauren-Rose: I am a sucker for french fries, pasta and anything spicy. My favorite cuisines are Korean and Japanese.
